Description

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) launched its report “The Global State of Democracy 2021: Building Resilience in a Pandemic Era” in November 2021. The bi-annual report has been a signature publication since its first release in 2017.

Since 2017, Phoenix Design Aid has had the pleasure of designing International IDEA’s Global State of Democracy report. This year, the report has been divided into six reports for different regions – including Global, Africa & Middle East, Europe, Asia & the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean (in English and Spanish). All reports are created under the same visual identity and structure to ensure coherence while still giving room for some differentiation for each regional report which is illustrated in the covers and colors.

For the global report, Phoenix Design Aid also designed icons that help to highlight and communicate International IDEA’s three-point agenda (Rebuild, Deliver and Prevent) while also navigating the reader.

In addition to the reports, Phoenix Design Aid created a microsite that provides the reader with a quick overview of the key messages and statistics from the figures and infographics and access to download the reports.

The Global State of Democracy 2021 report was featured in President Biden’s opening remarks for the Summit for Democracy – the first White House Virtual Summit for Democracy held by the Biden-Harris US administration in December 2021.

President Biden quotes research published in International IDEA’s report in his opening remarks as follows:

Another recent report, from the International Institute of Democracy and Electoral Assistance, noted that more than half of all democracies have experienced a decline in at least one aspect of their democracy over the last 10 years, including the United States.

President Biden’s opening remark can be watched here.
