Description

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is the leading global intergovernmental organization driving the energy transition and the adoption of renewable energy worldwide. As custodian of the global pledge to triple renewable power capacity by 2030 (#3xRenewables), IRENA plays a central role in tracking and communicating progress across regions and stakeholders.

Phoenix Design Aid was selected to support IRENA in developing and implementing its digital strategy for the global #3xRenewables campaign. The assignment focused on increasing awareness, visibility and public engagement through targeted and data-driven content strategies across LinkedIn and X, with a special focus on the Global South.

First, we delivered a comprehensive social media strategy tailored to key markets in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and South/Southeast Asia. This included target country selection, content and hashtag recommendations, paid push strategies with estimated budgets, and a detailed social media calendar. We also trained the team on paid social media use and LinkedIn tricks.

The second phase shifted focus to finance-oriented messaging directed at the Global North, including the G7, G20 and OECD countries. We provided a campaign strategy and calendar, influencer engagement recommendations, and budget proposals for paid media targeting donor audiences. The adoption of a closer and approachable style has led to highly positive reactions and increased responses to posts, showcasing the effectiveness of the new strategy.

In addition to content planning and strategic advisory services, Phoenix Design Aid provided ads training sessions for LinkedIn and X to strengthen IRENA’s internal capacity. We also introduced and trained the IRENA communications team on Bluesky, a fast-growing social media platform. As of early 2025, IRENA has gained over 2,000 followers on Bluesky, expanding its digital reach.

The campaign exceeded expectations with over 3 million views for the most important posts, generated across platforms, significantly boosting engagement with both institutional and public audiences.

Our collaboration continues into 2025, with a renewed contract to further support IRENA’s global communications on renewable energy and the energy transition.
